Delegation of Iraqi women visited G17 PLUS

The delegation of women from Iraq visited G17 PLUS today, and talked to the G17 PLUS Members of Serbian Parliament and the Parliament of Serbia and Montenegro, as well as the representatives of G17 PLUS Women's Network about the women rights in Iraq and Serbia, and about the protection of their interests and social status.

Women-members of Iraqi political parties, some of which are currently members of Iraqi Government, MPs, and representatives of Iraqi non-governmental organizations and women associations are visiting Serbia for several days, and during their stay here they have talked to the representatives of G17 PLUS about women and their role in transition and in the fight for equality.

Taking into account the fact that the new Constitution is currently being made in Iraq, female associations and non-governmental organizations have initiated a series of events aimed at increasing the level of consciousness in the society about the importance of advocating the equality of sexes in the Constitution itself. For that reason the visit to Serbia was organized.

G17 PLUS spokeswoman Ivana Grbiæ has made the members of the Iraqi delegation familiar with the organization and the activities of G17 PLUS, as well as with the steps taken in order to achieve sexual equality in Serbia.
